Travel Tuesday: Costa Rican Pura Vida

I'm dedicating this Travel Tuesday to a place that holds special meaning to us - Costa Rica.  It was the sight of our first weekend getaway together - we laugh when we look back on it b/c it literally happened like this.  I said, "I've been wanting to go to Costa Rica", he said "me too" and we went to a computer and booked a trip for Memorial Day weekend (the same weekend we are getting married).  We've been down there several times since that first trip and each time we grow to love it a little bit more.  Some day we hope to have a second home down there but we need to work on the first home first!

We been to several parts of Costa Rica - Nicoya Penisula (Nosara, Tamarindo and various beaches) and Pacific Coast (Jaco, Hermosa, Quepos, Manuel Antonio, Dominical, Uvita).  If you are looking for a place that offers an unlimited amount of adventure but also with a major laid back vibe then book your ticket. If you prefer a resort feel and want manicured roads and easy access to places you might want to try another country. It would be a fabulous place for a very remote and intimate beach wedding and the perfect spot to honeymoon.  If you have questions or want advice on planning a trip or honeymoon in Costa Rica feel free to reach out to me - I'd love to help and talk about my favorite place on Earth.

    Some of my favorites...

Cuna del Angel - A somewhat off the beaten path Hotel Californiaesque place south of Playa Dominical.  We stumbled along this place on one of our trips and were the only guests in the hotel.  It is a whimsical boutique hotel with a small infinity pool that overlooks the ocean in the distant. The restaurant was gorgeous with beautiful handmade Costa Rican accents and amazing food and drinks.  The staff was friendly and very attentive - maybe b/c we were the only ones there! But it's definitely worth a stopover on a trip to Uvita or down to the Osa Penisula.

On the beach in Nosara via Harmony Hotel

Nosara - Probably our favorite town in Costa Rica - a hidden gem (and locals like it that way) on the Nicoya Penisula.  If you are looking for a place where you never have to wear more than board shorts and flip-flops (no shirt required) than check out Nosara.  It's a total surfer village with a super chill vibe and really friendly locals.   For a great $4.00 meal check out Pancho's for the best fish tacos and margaritas I've ever had!  But there is no shortage of great food and drinks in this little village and some very romantic places as well for all you honeymooners.  I'd probably stay in some little house rental right on the beach but check out the Harmony Hotel which really seems to captures the true essence of Nosara.

Manuel Antonio - A romantic getaway with stunning tropical scenery and endless adventure possibilities.  We love MA - it's what you would think of when you think of Costa Rica...rainforest, jungle, beautiful white sand beaches. You can go ziplining through the jungle, trekking through Manual Antonio park, take a dip in the warm waters of one of the numerous gorgeous beaches or watch the sunset from your hotel (most with spectaular views of the ocean and park).  This would be my top pick in Costa Rica for a honeymoon - it offers several great accomodation options that would cater to newlywed couples.  One of our favorites is the La Mariposa for the amazing views and infiinity pool (great bartender at the pool bar!).

Sunset at Villa Caletas (this picture doesn't do it justice)

Villa Caletas - If you have a decent honeymoon budget and don't care to leave your hotel I would say check out Villa Caletas.  Even if you don't stay there you absolutely must view one sunset from there - it has to be in my top 5 sunsets of all time (and I've seen lots of good ones).  The grounds are breathtaking and decor and details are so unique.  There is an amphitheatre built into the side of the hotel that features some great concerts and music every night during sunset.   Check out the website and drool over the photo gallery to get a better idea of how special this place really is.
